Auckland barrister Eb Leary has died.
Mr Leary achieved some fame as former lawyer to “Mr Asia”, drug dealer Terry Clark, and was subsequently struck off the roll due to links with the drug organisation and claims of money laundering. He was subsequently readmitted in 2007.
Born as Edward Poulter Leary he was commonly known as “Eb” and was also a lawyer known for his courtroom success, often working closely with criminal law legend Sir Peter Williams, who died last year.
After his first wife Geraldine won $830,000 in Lotto, the couple bought Kingfish Lodge in the Far North, which they developed into an exclusive game fishing lodge and resort complex.
Following his readmission he was again charged with money laundering with his second wife Claudine and associate Nicholas Henri Voerman, although the charge was dismissed after a recorded conversation between himself, Voerman and his then wife Claudine was ruled inadmissable.
Eb Leary was 71 and died of cancer.
