“Power List” QC Appointed to High Court Bench

LawFuel “Power List” entrant Paul Davison QC has been appointed a High Court judge today.

The announcement was made by Attorney General Chris Finlayson QC in respect of the Judge, the son of former Chief Justice Sir Ronald Davison QC and a highly regarded criminal and civil law expert.

Paul Davison graduated with an LLB from the University of Auckland in 1975 and was employed at Auckland firm Glaister Ennor & Kiff. He joined Keegan Alexander Tedcastle & Friendlander in 1977 and became a partner the following year.  He became a Queens Counsel in 1996, six years after going to the bar.

kim-dotcomHe became best known in recent times for his representation of Kim Dotcom, the former internet mogul who faces extradition charges from the United States.

 

While at Keegan Alexander, Justice Davison appeared before Royal Commissions of Inquiry into the crash on Mount Erebus and into the prosecution of Arthur Alan Thomas. He also acted for a number of New Zealand Vietnam War Veterans in relation to a class action commenced in the United States of America seeking damages for the effects suffered from exposure to “Agent Orange”.

As a barrister sole Justice Davison had an extensive criminal defence practice and was engaged by the Crown to assist in a number of high profile murder trials. He also acted in a variety of civil proceedings

He has been a member of the Auckland Crown Solicitor’s Prosecution Panel since 1981 and is a contributing author to “Adams on Criminal Law”.
