Chris Cairns’ old nemesis Lalit Modi is taking Cairns back to Court, filing a £1.5 million civil claim that will be heard next year and which follows Cairns’ successful libel case against the former Indian Premier League chief, seeking to recoup £90,000 he paid in damages plus costs that mounted up to £1.5 million.
Modi is suing Cairns for fraud alleging on the basis of the criminal trial evidence heard over the past two months that he had won on the basis of untrue evidence.
The case will also likely have Lou Vincent and Vincent McCullum recalled to give evidence against Cairns in a case that will not make them legally bound to appear.
The Telegraph report that Vincent will be reluctant to return to the UK in case he were to face criminal charges relating to his own fixing while playing county cricket.
He admitted money-laundering offences in this country and may fear arrest if he were to give evidence. He was told that would not happen during the criminal trial but may fear the police stance has now hardened.
Brendon McCullum
McCullum’s lawyer said this week that the New Zealand captain was now looking to put the case behind him and concentrate on cricket. He will not want to return to the witness box and face further cross examination about evidence he gave the ICC some years ago, running the risk of further attacks on his integrity.
