Former New Zealand Law Society president John Marshall has died in Wellington.
Mr Marshall had been diagnosed with a brain tumour almost a year ago. He was made a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit in the recent Queen’s Birthday honours list for his services to the law.
The son of former Prime Minister Sir John Marshall, he was formerly the Chief Commissioner of the Transport Accident Investigation Commission after a five-year term.
He specialised in arbitration and mediation work as well as wide ranging litigation and had been a partner at Buddle Findlay for many years.
He was President of the NZ Law Society from 2007-2010 and has also been chair of the Wellington College Foundation from 2010 and the Appeals Council of the NZ Institute of Chartered Accountants from 2003.
He is survived by his wife Mary and their three children, John, Annabel and Clementine, and granddaughter Rose.
